Let’s go to the Starbucks oracle, John
Folksy Sarah Palin tried a bit of Starbucks cup wisdom in California herself, but it didn’t quite work out:
I’m reading on my Starbucks mocha cup, ok? The quote of the day… It was Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State and UN ambassador. … Now she said it, I didn’t. She said, ‘There’s a place in [...]

Sarah Palin…sorry boys, we’re not that stupid
It’s been said everywhere, practically, but Palin is exactly the kind of scary, right wing evangelical that we do NOT need in any sort of office, telling us how to run our lives. How cynical of the media to think women are so stupid that we’ll vote for anything that has a vagina…and how incredibly [...]

GOP candidate abortion questions continue
Mike Erickson (R) is running against perennially losing candidate for everything Kevin Mannix in the primaries for Darlene Hooley’s seat in Oregon’s fifth congressional district. He has been accused of paying for an ex-girlfriend to have an abortion. In a story in the Oregonian today, Erickson denies those allegations.
He acknowledged dating a woman named Tawnya [...]

In the news: 28 million women face unwanted pregnancy
Amazing little story on MSNBC. It’s a couple days old, but hey…I am busy these days. Some excerpts:
Each year, half of American women who would rather not get pregnant will have an unplanned pregnancy, often because they failed to use their contraceptive properly or forgot to use it at all, U.S. researchers said [...]

Whoa, guess I don’t make such a good “poor post-abortive woman” story after all
I’ve been paying some visits to inbound links and saying really…stress relieving…things to the forced-birth nutcases who tried to exploit my entries about having an abortion. An interesting thing has happened. Outside of a few people who probably also believe the earth is flat, many of the anti-choice links have come down. Presumably they [...]

A primer on writing about abortion experiences
If you’re a writer or long-time blogger like me, writing is likely part of the way you process your experiences and identify how you think about the world. It was a no-brainer for me to write about having had an abortion as a way of working through it, and I did so both in a [...]

Link: Kathryn Joyce on the Christian “Right” and xenophobia
The cover article for the most recent issue of The Nation, “Missing: The ‘Right’ Babies,” hits close to home for me, given my concern over unacknowledged racism in the anti-choice crowd. I’m sure it will have a lot of far-righters’ panties in a bunch. Did I say panties? I meant chastity belts.

An open letter to the “pro-lifers” misusing my writing
I’m disgusted by your misrepresentation of my experience for your own gains. You claim to care about me, and about life in general. Dawn Eden and your sad, sad followers: take down your posts. Show you are even capable of caring about others. I’ve had enough of your exploitation.

Breathing easy
I finally made it to the pharmacy to have my asthma prescription refilled today; I’d not picked up my last prescription because I was debating at the time whether or not it made sense to try to have a baby now. Between the way worsened symptoms brought on by pregnancy and suspending the regimen due [...]

Are anti-choice Americans motivated by racism?
It’s a question I’ve been thinking about and discussing with V in our office lately. Angela Davis’s chapter on “Racism, Birth Control and Reproductive Rights” in her book Women, Race and Class talks about the problematic historical relationship between (white) feminists and African American women. Before our times, eugenics were briefly in vogue among some [...]
