Drunk dialing from the UK
One of the few great things about having friends who live in far-away time zones (as opposed to close by) is that, when they drunk dial you, you are more likely to be sober. And due to my mid-afternoon sobriety, I have this great one from Simon:
I was drinking whiskey. And you know, drinking whiskey [...]

Krzysztof Kieslowski, and then more Krzysztof Kieslowski
I’ve been watching a couple of Kieslowski’s cycles of films lately with F, beginning with Trois couleurs in March and then The Decalogue throughout April. Of the Three Colors trilogy, I find myself consistently torn between Blue and Red, as White is to this trilogy what Temple of Doom is to the Indiana Jones [...]

Another example of hetero as biologically non-universal
I love this stuff! Not just because I love Julia Whitty and would raise albatross babies with her if I could, but also because this is heterosexist-myth-busting goodness. From one of her May 29 entries on The Blue Marble:
Laysan albatrosses in Hawaii employ a strategy called reciprocity, whereby unrelated females pair together and take turns [...]

Having breasts=invitation to ogle?
Memorial Day weekend. What can I say? I drove too much, which caused some problems walking for a few days, but the rest ultimately did me good. Back in the cube farm now; somehow, I am supposed to fit some 15 hours of meetings into this 32-hour work week and still get things done. This [...]

Meh. Why can’t I be a cyborg?
Sometimes, having a living, breathing body sucks. Sometimes it sucks for a long time. This shouldn’t happen, and especially to someone young and easily freaked out like me.
All that to say that I’ve had severe pain these last few weeks, pain like I had before starting physical therapy after the botched surgery a year and [...]

Brown rice for lunch, ice cream for dinner
Ice cream, strawberries, and kahlua, to be precise. My diet has been messed up for a few weeks. First there was the birthday and the week of parties, then other things, now a bit down because I’m not seeing much of the people I love these days. Ice cream might make that better.

Oregon primaries: Why I voted for Hillary
I surprised myself this evening. Filling out my mail-in ballot has been on my to-do list for a couple weeks, and since it’s due tomorrow, I figured now was the time. I’m lucky enough to have met all of the candidates for statewide office for whom I voted, and a number of the locals too. [...]

To whichever progressive political organization gave my contact info to Al Franken
Dear Pandering Assholes,
When I give money to support progressive political causes, it is not so that I can start getting junk mail from every Democratic organization and candidate in the country. I am not–I repeat, NOT–interested in supporting a senate candidate in any state besides my own. That includes Al Franken, whose “Dear Person I’m [...]
